Various reasons can prevent fertility. Genetic and environmental factors are decisive here. If you have difficulty having children for some reason, you are probably interested in the IVF process. In this article, you can find the answer to the questions of "How in vitro fertilization is performed?" and “How long does In vitro fertilization take?”. You can also contact Phoenix Health and get detailed information from our experts.

What is In Vitro Fertilization?

Let's give a detailed answer to the question of "what is IVF?" and how the process proceeds. IVF treatment is the fertilization of egg cells called oocytes, which are collected from the woman, with male sperm under laboratory conditions, and the embryo obtained from here is placed in the woman's uterus. Embryo transfer is performed in a certain number. Conception in this way is the same process as a normal pregnancy. The only difference is the environment in which fertilization takes place.

IVF treatment was first tried in England. The first successful treatment was performed by a scientist named Robert Edwards in 1978. In our country, at the end of the 1980s, in vitro fertilization was performed for the first time at Ege University. Today, thanks to the developments in medicine, applications can be made with different methods.

Methods Used in IVF Treatment

An IVF centre with qualified specialists performs in vitro fertilization using the classical method (IVF) and microinjection (ICSI). The first method, IVF, is usually preferred if your sperm quality and sperm count are sufficient. The ICSI method, on the other hand, involves preparing the egg obtained from the woman for injection and placing the sperm into a single egg.

In order for IVF methods to be applied, you must have sexual intercourse with your partner for an average of 1 year without resorting to contraceptive methods and you must not get any results. This condition is known as infertility in the medical literature. If you try for a year and cannot have a child, you can apply for IVF treatment.

Who Can Have In Vitro Fertilization Treatment?

When you apply for IVF treatment, you will be subjected to a number of tests. The decision to start treatment is taken by looking at the following situations:

  • If the fallopian tubes in women are blocked, damaged or removed.
  • Women are at an advanced age when fertility declines.
  • Failure to achieve results with medication treatment methods.
  • Adhesion of the fallopian tubes that prevents the fallopian tubes from capturing eggs.
  • Insufficient sperm count and quality in men.

What is the IVF Treatment Process Like?

As mentioned above, you and your partner will undergo a comprehensive assessment before starting your treatment. Here, experts will inform you about the stages of IVF treatment. At this stage, you will find an answer to the question of how in vitro fertilization works, and you will not have any question marks in your mind. Afterwards, the ovaries are stimulated and many eggs are obtained. On the 3rd day of the menstrual cycle in women, the treatment process consisting of hormone injections begins. This period usually lasts an average of 2 weeks, but the duration may vary from case to case.

Then the step of collecting the eggs is started. Hormone injections are again used for the eggs to hatch. The timing of the collection phase is critical. Usually 40 hours after the injection, the eggs are collected under anaesthesia. The number obtained is usually between 1 and 40. You can be discharged after this procedure, which takes about half an hour. Fertilization will then take place and an appointment will be scheduled for the day of implantation into the uterus.

Embryo Transfer and Pregnancy Test

After the egg fertilization, you proceed to the embryo transfer step. In this procedure, also called IVF transfer, the zygotes are waited for a few days and then released through the cervix. No anaesthesia is needed during this procedure. Ultrasonography is used to help. If you are under 35 years of age, you will have 1 embryo. In other groups of women, this number is maximum 2.

You will receive progesterone or oestrogen supplements for about 2 weeks after the embryo transfer.  After an average of 2 weeks, a pregnancy test is performed to determine whether the pregnancy has occurred. If the test is positive, the condition of the gestational sac is checked by ultrasound. The process after IVF transfer proceeds approximately in this way. You can have this treatment safely under the right conditions.

What is the Success Rate in IVF Treatment?

The most important question in the minds of partners who want to have IVF treatment is undoubtedly related to the success rate. This rate may vary depending on many factors. Experts mostly talk about a success rate of 1 in 3. Especially in women under 35 years of age, there is a positive result of up to 50 per cent. This rate decreases at older ages. Therefore, as you can see in our article, we can say that factors such as the age of women, sperm count and quality in men, ovarian reserves, fallopian tubes and the condition of the uterus play a decisive role in the course of treatment.
